Osem-Nestlé teams up with UBQ Materials to create sustainable pallets for shipping and logistics

Collaboration makes Osem-Nestlé the first Israeli company to integrate UBQ™ into pallets for logistic operations.

      28 Feb 2022

TEL AVIV, Israel – March 28, 2022 – UBQ Materials, cleantech developer of advanced materials made from waste, announced today a collaboration and pilot program with Osem-Nestlé, one of Israel’s largest food manufacturers and distributors and a subsidiary of Nestlé, the largest food and beverage company in the world.

“Environmental responsibility extends beyond the consumer-facing products and runs through the entire supply chain. Pallets made with UBQ™ are one example of opportunity for impact that occurs behind the scenes in our logistics infrastructure,” said Amit Ron, Packaging Manager at Osem Nestle. “With a single material substitution, we are addressing a broad range of sustainability goals: reducing carbon footprint, diverting waste, and preserving finite natural resources.”

Replacing petroleum-based plastics at scale with sustainable alternatives requires the substitute materials to be consistent, and cost-effective. UBQ Materials has introduced the market to one solution that ticks all of the boxes; UBQ™ is a competitively priced thermoplastic converted entirely from unsorted municipal solid waste, including all organics, that have been diverted from landfills.

As part of this collaboration, Osem-Nestlé is launching a pilot integrating UBQ™ into logistics pallets used in the Osem-Nestlé’s Tzabar Salads product line. The more sustainable pallets are manufactured by Plasgad, a leader in reusable plastic packaging, storage and transport solutions. The use of UBQ™ in the injection process of the 14 kg PG1090 pallet is tailored through various customization options to the specific needs of the product, resulting in a 24% decrease in CO2-equivalent emissions over a 20-year time period.

While a majority of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are represented by transportation within the logistics sector, transit packaging products like pallets and shipping crates offer a significant opportunity for GHG reduction in this sector.

“As consumer goods companies raise the bar on sustainability, attention will continue to shift to the massive use of ‘invisible plastics’ throughout supply chains,” said Tato Bigio, Co-founder and Co-CEO of UBQ Materials. “The potential for UBQ™ applications within Osem-Nestlé is significant, with far-reaching influence to trickle down across the global organization and the industry at large.”

UBQ™ has a wide array of applications in the retail and logistics industry, including trays, shopping carts, baskets, bins, crates, displays, and various other products. Pallets made with UBQ™ are just the start within this sector, as demand continues to grow across global consumer brands for more sustainable materials across the supply chain.
